The Top 50 Schools Offering Online PhD Programs 2015-2016

Our list of top 50 schools offering Ph.D. programs is a broad ranking which takes into account accreditation and general reputation. With the increased presence and acceptance of online Ph.D. programs throughout the U.S., prestigious institutions and many state schools are now offering online degrees with more frequency. Some of the programs offer hybrid degrees which have a mixture of mostly online courses with on-campus occasional interactions. Not all schools are ranked by U.S. News and World Report, but most of them are in top lists by the well known ranking site. The schools that made the list were accredited, were non-profit, and, at least for most, had some level of name recognition.


In constructing the list, a number of sites were used for research including U.S. News and World Report, The National Center for Education Statistics, and The Guide to Online Schools.

Johns Hopkins University provides an online Doctor of Education degree. The degree is specifically for those who are in leadership positions and want to focus on improving school environments. Johns Hopkins Education Program is ranked #1 by U.S. News and World Reports for best education school. The program boasts 66 full-time faculty at a 1.1:1 ratio. Tuition costs about $18,000 per academic year and has about 36% of its graduate students doing work through distance education. The program requires 90 graduate credits with a minimum of 54 credits being done at the doctoral level. Areas of specialization for educational leaders includes Entrepreneurial Leadership in Education; Mind, Brain, and Teaching; and Technology Integration in K-16 Education. For this particular program, the GRE exams are not required for entrance. 28.9% of applicants are accepted to their Ph.D./Ed.D. programs. Johns Hopkins is ranked #12 in U.S. News and World Reports list of best national schools and is accredited by the National council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

University of Southern California provides online degrees for the Doctor of Education with emphases in Global Executive and Organizational Change and Leadership. The program comes with a hefty price tag at $47,562 but the degree comes with the prestige of a USC doctorate. The education department at USC has 20 full time faculty and has a student to faculty ratio of 14:1. The Global Executive program is the first of its kind and is targeted at senior leaders in education who wish to cultivate skills in education for the 21st century. USC is ranked #25 in its best national schools by U.S. News and World Report. USC is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

UNC Chapel Hill offers an online Doctor of Physical Therapy transitional degree for licensed therapists to gain further knowledge and expertise in their field. This prestigious institution boasts a rather low graduate level tuition for its status with out-of-state tuition at $14,140 per year and in-state tuition at $5,537 per year. The program has specializations in four practice areas: orthopedics, neurology, pediatrics, and geriatrics. The UNC Rehabilitation Center is certified by the Joint Commission and has been awarded accreditation by CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

4. University of WisconsinUW-crest

University of Wisconsin provides online doctorates in Nursing (Ph.D.) and Nursing Practice (DNP). The faculty to student ratio for this program is about 1.7:1 In-state tuition is $23,807 while out-of-state tuition is $33,704. 82% of those in the medical school receive financial aid of some sort with 39% receiving grants. U.S. News and World Reports ranks UW amongst national universities at #5 for Family Medicine, #16 in Women’s Health, #6 in Rural Medicine, #28 for Medical Research and #9 for Primary Care. The School of Medicine at UW has 1,488 full and part-time faculty. UW is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

5. University of FloridaFlorida

The University of Florida provides online degrees in Doctor of Education, Doctor of Audiology, Ph.D. in Classical Studies, Doctor of Nursing, and a Doctor of Pharmacy. In the Education field, there are specializations in Curriculum and Instruction (Technology or Teaching and Teacher Education), Educational Leadership, or Higher Education Administration. In the area of Classics, there are emphases in Classical Civilization or Latin and Roman Studies. Out-of-state tuition is $22,518 per year and $8,082 for in-state students. U.S. News and World Report ranks Florida’s online education program at #13 in their top 50 education online education programs. The Classics program is the only one of its kind in the U.S. The University of Florida is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

6. Pennsylvania State UniversityPenn State

Pennsylvania State University offers an online doctorate in Nursing. Ranked #38 in best nursing schools in the nation and #47 nationally among universities generally by U.S. News and World Report, Pennsylvania State University provides the online Nursing degree for those who are currently nurses and wish to continue practicing while going to school. There are two entry options for the DNP degree: directly from the Bachelor degree in Nursing for nursing administrators and post-Master of Science in Nursing for nurse administrators and for practicing nurses. Tuition is $14,490, with no distinction between in-state and out-of-state students. Pennsylvania State University is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

George Washington University provides online doctoral degrees in Engineering Management, Systems Engineering, and Nursing Practice. U.S. News and World Report ranks GWU’s online Nursing Program at #9. They rank the Systems Engineering program at #51 in the nation. Tuition is approximately $20,000 a year whether one is an in-state or out-of-state student. The online nursing program has 22 full-time Faculty and 39 part-time faculty while the Engineering Program draws from 84 full time faculty and 118 part-time faculty on campus. GWU is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

8. Clemson UniversityCLemson

Ranked #62 among national universities by U.S. News and World Report, Clemson offers online PhD’s in Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design (RCID) in the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities and in Healthcare Genetics (HG) in the College of Health, Education and Human Development. Tuition is $17,450 per year. The RCID major is heavy in theory and method with courses such as “Cultural Research Methods”, “Empirical Research Methods”, and “Philosophy, Languages, and Arts”. In the HG degree, students choose from three tracks: Interventionists, Translational Bench Science, or Ethics and Health Policy. The uniqueness of these programs along with the prestige of the institution places Clemson high on our list. Clemson University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

9. Texas A&M UniversityA&M

Texas A&M University offers online doctorates in the areas of Education and Agriculture and Life Science. The degree in Education concentrates on training leaders with expertise in curriculum development. All of the faculty teaching in the program are full-time Texas A&M faculty, providing a high quality faculty for an online degree. The degree is self-paced and is highly affordable at $7,112 per year for in-state students and $13,140 per year for out-of-state students. U.S. News and World Reports ranks Texas A&M’s education programs at #68 overall. The Agricultural degree is a joint degree with Education since it is a doctorate with an agricultural education emphasis. The program is also a joint program with Texas Tech University, #27 on our list. There are 32 faculty members in the program between the two universities. Iowa State University has found a unique niche among schools offering online doctoral degrees. University of Missouri’s strengths in this list come from the institution’s placement on the top national colleges in the U.S. by U.S. News and World Reports (ranked at #103) and the variety of online doctorates offered through their program. UM offers a PhD in Art Education, Nursing, and Architectural Studies. They offer doctorates in Educational Leadership and Doctor of Nurse Practitioner (DNP). The DNP degree has a number of concentrations: Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Family Nurse Practitioner, Family Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Leadership and Innovations in Health Care, Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. 16. Loyola University ChicagoLoyola

Loyola University Chicago provides unique programs for online students at the doctoral level. The institution provides doctorates in Bioethics, Nursing Practice, and School Psychology. In the Bioethics and Health Policy major there are three concentrations: Clinical Bioethics, Organization Bioethics, and Catholic Bioethics. The program consists of online courses and short on-campus intensive courses. The Nursing Practice program can be taken entirely online and has three tracks: a general track, Informatics and Outcomes track, and a post-BSN Infection Prevention track. 17. University of Kansaskansas

The University of Kansas provides an online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree and a Nursing Ph.D. program. Kansas is ranked at #99 in national university rankings and #25 in national online graduate Nursing Programs. The Ph.D. in Nursing was among the first of its kind in the nation when it was started in 1983. The program began offering the degree online in 2006. In-state tuition is a reasonable $6,750 with out-of-state tuition set at $15,840. The program boasts 35 full-time faculty and has a number of ways to attend courses including one-week summer intensive on-campus classes as well as fully online courses. Each student is paired with a primary advisor. 22. University of KentuckyUK

University of Kentucky provides online doctorates in Educational Policy Studies, Rehabilitation Sciences, both a Doctor of Education and a Ph.D. in Education, and Nursing Practice. U.S. News and World Report ranks Kentucky at #129 among the nation’s universities. Their fully online doctorates include doctorates in Agricultural Education, Systems and Engineering Management, Technical Communication and Rhetoric, and Higher Education. TTU’s hybrid courses utilize a mixture of online courses with summer intensive experiences in classrooms. The doctorate offered as a hybrid is in Curriculum and Instruction with two separate emphases: Curriculum Studies and Teacher Education or in STEM Education. TTU ranks high on U.S. News and World Reports list for best online graduate engineering program at #20 nationally. There are 21 full time Engineering faculty. Rowan University provides online Doctor of Education degrees with various emphases.
