Sports management, sports health, and exercise science are some of the most in-demand fields in the 21st century, and an online sports management doctorate can be a proven way forward in a career for anyone who loves sports and athletic competition. After all, as much as high school and college athletes may love the sport, only a fraction of them will get to the professional leagues. However, that’s no reason sports-loving students can’t go into a career that keeps them in the game behind the scenes. Sports, athletic training, and recreation represent one of the biggest global industries – well over $90 billion in US dollars. In the US alone, sports merchandising – just merchandising – is worth nearly $15 billion as of 2017. Sports is big business, and it takes a lot of coaches, managers, and health professionals to make it all happen.
Why Get an Online Sports Management Degree?
In other words, there’s a tremendous amount of money in sports, and a lot of job opportunity in the field, as long as you’re not trying to be on the field – that’s a lot dicier. According to a PBS Newshour report, sports injuries in college athletics alone add up to more than $1 billion in medical costs. In professional sports, more than 2000 injuries per 10,000 workers makes athletics one of the 5 most dangerous occupations, and injuries account for the largest source of loss in the industry. On the plus side, though, all that money and all those injuries mean jobs for trained professionals, from sports management to kinesiology and human performance education to sports and exercise science research.
That’s why colleges and universities all over the US have developed degree programs in sports management, sport science and medicine, kinesiology, and other related fields. Sports management degree jobs are consistently on the rise, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and so are jobs for experts in areas that research sports injuries and human performance – and that’s not even counting areas like occupational therapy and physical therapy, that aren’t directly sports-related, but are key to keeping the industry going.
Choosing the Right Online Sports Management Degree
Because sports and athletics is such a complex, interdisciplinary field, these programs can take a lot of forms. For instance, a Sports Management PhD can help students prepare for executive positions in the sports industry, using their analytical research skills to make informed decisions from the top. On the other hand, a Doctor of Education (Ed D) can help sports and exercise sciences educators earn higher pay rates. An online Kinesiology degree can lead to a career in research and consultation.
Some programs will be fully online, and the greater respect and recognition for online degrees is a real consideration for professionals today. Some programs will require a traditional thesis or doctoral dissertation, but more often, students will complete a practical capstone project that combines research with real-life application – knowledge they can use. Plus, costs for an online PhD can be considerably lower, making for a greater value when students secure their rewarding career in sports management, sports and exercise sciences, and human performance.
Programs in the Top Online Sport Science and Management PhD Programs are ranked by affordability, from lowest tuition rates to highest.

Drexel incorporated experiential co-op learning into their curricula early in their history, giving students who choose a co-op education an opportunity to alternate between classroom learning, and working in their field of study, as a way to gain hands-on experience.
Within Drexel University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions lives their PhD Program in Rehabilitation Sciences, offered in the on-campus/online hybrid format. In person, coursework utilizes their 9,000 square foot state-of-the-art research lab. This type of degree plan was designed to bring physical therapists and those in fields similar to sports management and exercise physiology to the next level of their career with research as the foundation. Students will learn the skills to become leaders in the field of rehabilitation sciences, by learning the mechanisms and effective interventions for rehabilitation care delivery. Each student will create a unique research agenda that will impact health and rehabilitation sciences as a discipline.
